An interview with medical-legal illustrator, Annie Gough, by Paul Kelly

Today we have a special episode where medical illustrator and animator, Paul Kelly, interviews Medical-Legal illustrator, Annie Gough. Annie is a veteran that has worked in the niche field of med-legal illustration. She's recently released a book called Injury illustrated—How Medical Images Win Legal Cases. Injury Illustrated is the first book of its kind. It is the essential guide on medical illustrations used in the legal context. This book examines the creation of visual graphics known as demonstrative exhibits.
About Annie:
Annie Gough (goff) is an independent Certified Medical Illustrator known for her professionalism, transparency, creativity and passion. Annie’s career has been defined by her mastery of storytelling in the legal community, exceptional customer service, and vast case experiences. With over 20 years in practice, Annie has been a part of many successful settlements and trial verdicts in medical malpractice, personal injury, and wrongful death cases. Annie provides medical illustrations and legal exhibit consultation for demand letters, expert depositions, mediation and courtroom presentations.
Annie is a unique provider, offering you single point of contact. She is a full service consultant, personally reviewing all your client’s medical records, reports and radiology studies. In 1999, Annie was accepted into the Medical Illustration Program at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, one of only four medical schools in North America offering a Masters of Medical illustration. Upon earning her Master’s degree, Annie worked for five years at the Law Offices of Frank Branson in Dallas. Balancing her in-house experience with studio management, she spent two years as Art Director at High Impact Litigation in Denver, managing ten artists and directing 3D animations and interactive presentations.
Annie’s unique skillset comes from a range of experiences beyond graduate school. Annie’s passion for the field was sparked at Kansas State University where she was elected to the Human Body Cadaver Dissection Team. She was also named The Most Promising Student in the Division of Biology. After graduating, she worked as an autopsy technician at the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center, earning hands-on experience that sets her illustrations apart to this day.
Annie often lectures on the medical illustration/animation profession and speaks about her legal exhibit expertise to audiences such as the Dallas Bar Association; the Colorado Art Institute; University of Colorado Denver; and St. George’s University.
